From where do scientific terms come? The Language of Science analyzes the development of scientific vocabulary from its origins, linked to daily farming and the need to have a system of measure for commercial trade, up to 17th Century scientific innovations and subsequent consolidation period during the 18th Century.   The 18th Century was by far the most significant in terms of the history of science, and Crosland's work strongly focuses on this.  The period from 1750 to 1800 witnessed intense activity, which although not well known, served to organize and revolutionize scientific denomination and units of measure.  The author shines light on this period in three chapters focused on the development of botanical and chemical terminology, and the subject of measure, and relates the three areas to each other.  A last chapter describes the impact that the international conferences had on the language of science.
Crosland's writing is clear and concise.  The Language of Science will interest whoever feels concerned by the social sciences, the history of language, and of course, science.  He gives access to an area that has been known to intimidate with its complex language.  Scientists and laymen alike will find this book full of food for thought.

Maurice Crosland taught the History of Sciences at Leeds University and in several leading American universities.  He chaired the History of Sciences Department at Kent University in Canterbury.  He has long been interested in scientific language and served as Honorary Editor of the British Journal for the History of Science and as president of the British Society for the History of Science.
